Practising Co-Design

To start with, we took to the internet to do some research about Novias logo, what different kinds of types there are, their fonts and colors. First, we know that we don’t have the capacity to change the school’s logo, but we can come up with better suggestions to make this school trendier and more attractive, for future students.

To make suggestions we need to know the fonts and colors that Novia uses. The answer to that we get from Novias homepage, under the headline ‘’Grafiskt material’’. The font that are used in the logos are: Avenir Next, for printed texts and Corbel, for intern documents. The Novia colors are of course red, white and black, but also yellow-orange, blue, green and orange. Then we also made an interesting discovery, all the colors on the website and logo don’t exactly match the guidelines, but the differences in the colors are minimal. We will use the colors, in the guidelines, in our suggestion logos.

In these logos, that we have made, we want to bring forward the Business program in Novia. Which is our project for this course. Since there are a lot of different bachelor’s degree programs in Novia, a lot of people don’t know that Novia also offers a study in Business. That’s our project mission, to bring the business program further up in the school program market. In our suggestion logos we must keep the Novia text, but other than that it’s free.

We have gone with the basic red and black background, and the white Novia text in the middle. Then we have played around with where the Campus Åbo and Business should be placed. Personally, we like the first one best, with Campus Åbo on top. It’looks nice and shows the top elements in our project. Which school, where it is and what program it’s about.

Our four suggestion logos, in both red and black:

We have changed or more modified the Novia logo to a simpler and more attractive logo, that will fit better to the Novia Business organization that’s going to begin after the new year. After doing some research on the other University of Applied Sciences schools in Finland, we have decided to make the logo simpler. Since, the les and simpler it is, the more modern it looks, in our opinion. Only thing that could be changed is the text, now it’s a combination of Swedish and English, instead the words could be: Campus Turku – Novia – Business or Campus Åbo – Novia – Företagsekonomi.

‘’Your logo will have a huge impact on the first impression your business is going to make’’ (Zimmerlich, 2019) We think that this quote fits in perfectly in our project, since a schools logo is the first thing that a student notices.

“Great Logos Can Be Recreated by Hand, Off Memory” Your logo has to be easy to remember and could be replicated by hand. Take for example, Nike the Swoosh, Macdonalds arches or Adidas three stripes. These logos are simple but yet memorable and can easily be recreated by hand drawing. If a logo isn’t easy to remember or replicated it’s a sign it’s too complicated and not good. “Logos Should Look ‘Structurally Sound’’ A logo should also be balance and symmetrical. The human eye is attracted to the symbols that are organized and aligned symmetrical and odd numbers. (Davidson, 2019)

For us this task was simple, since we can’t change much in our school’s logo, only modify for the better, so that the concept of the product becomes more visible.
